The University of Ulster and ConnectED will be working together to accredit and manage a multimedia teacher training programme. Pilot studies will run in selected centres in the UK during the autumn of 2007 with a national roll out planned for January 2008.
'There is a serious and growing skills gap between students whose knowledge and use of multimedia expands by the day and teachers throughout education, who do not understand or use multimedia formats to enhance educational outcomes.' Professor John Gillespie, Head of Languages The University of Ulster
'We need to give teachers in higher, secondary and primary education the confidence to be able to podcast, vodcast, edit video and audio files easily and effectively as well as developing broadcast skills. We also need to show them how multimedia technology enables and enhances educational outcomes, informing engaging and assisting students in learning both in and out of the classroom, lecture theatre or tutorial. Unless we start to address the skills gap between student and teacher the investment being made in multimedia software and hardware throughout education becomes less valuable by the day.' Professor Greg Toner, University of Ulster
